Licensed!!

Last Sunday (10/19/08) I passed my private pilot checkride and received my pilot's license!! Ready to take my first solo trip as a licensed pilot...maybe Sedona for a burger? I feel a huge weight lifted after passing the test and studying so much.

Next week I continue my training on my instrument rating and commercial license....

Arizona monsoon winds + planes = insurance claim

So today as my flight lesson began, I noticed some clouds in the near distance...well, one monsoon later (and one flight aborted) an airplane parked and chained down (with 3 chains) at my flight school lifted off the ground and flipped on top of the plane parked next to it (which just happened to be the airplane I taxied out to the runway with and then turned around after seeing the storm brewing)!! May be hard to see in this pic but it was the best I could get in the downpour and winds gusting to 60+ mph...(that's the tail/rudder of the flipped over airplane on top/middle of parked plane)

Flying solo

Today I completed my first solo cross-country flight! My flight took me from Chandler to Tuscon (International) then over to Ryan Field (just northwest of Tuscon) and then back to Chandler. Almost 2.5 hours solo! The first 10 minutes were a blinding reminder that at 5500 feet finding ground references that are familiar are extremely difficult at first creating this feeling that you are lost even though you just left your airport 5 minutes ago!
My next solo cross-country is up to Sedona and back...I'll definitely take some pics on that one...

UPDATED! A 2008 Post!

Wow! This past year has held so much! In June of '07 we sadly said good-bye to our church family in Northern California to begin the journey of making our way back to Phoenix to help raise our nephews who lost their Dad. We "enjoyed" the adventure of selling a home in the funky real estate market and were blown away at God's faithfulness and His grace in the closing of our house in January 2008! In that time off paid church ministry we were able to take a road trip of a lifetime that lasted almost 2 months! We traveled over 6000 miles (with a toddler!) visiting friends and family from Phoenix, to Texas, to Missouri, Ohio, Kansas, and Colorado!! The conversations, laughter, and food were amazing and I came away learning and being shaped in ways I was unprepared for! After selling our home in California we moved in with our nephews and sister in Phoenix, began a new job, and I began flight training--a passion I've held for two decades but have been unable to pursue until now...

The dream and desire is to become a pilot and use the airplane to help people, like a missinary pilot. Missionary pilots take pastors, food, water, and medical care in foreign countries to villages that cannot be reached by foot or vehicles. There are many steps in this path and a lot of training that is necessary. So we are taking one step at a time and waiting, listening to God along the way...I am scheduled to finish my private pilot license by August/September this year...

**Update (10/20/08): I received my pilot's license on 10/18/08!! Now pursuing my commercial/instrument ratings...

Switchfoot's "Awakening"

I'm continually blown away at Switchfoot's creativity and substance in their songwriting and music. Their new CD, "Oh, Gravity" shows this once again...

Check out the new video of their song "Awakening"--the lyrics remind me of the movie, The Matrix when Neo is set free from his slavery and tries to use his eyes in the "new world" and they hurt because (according to Morpheus) he has never really used them. May we be Awakened to Live new (John 10:10).
(The video really has nothing to do with the lyrics and meaning of the song, but sure looks like they had fun making it...)

The Cost of 'Nondiscipleship'

Been reading and re-reading Willard's book, The Great Omission and have thought about posting so many thoughts and insights gained from within that I would be in danger of posting his entire work here so I will begin with this one where he writes about the costs of a life not following Jesus--a life of 'nondiscipleship':
"Nondiscipleship costs abiding peace, a life penetrated throughout by love, faith that sees everything in the light of God's overriding governance for good, hopefulness that stands firm in the most discouraging of circumstances, power to do what is right and withstand the forces of evil. In short, nondiscipleship cost you exactly that abudance of life Jesus said he came to bring (John 10:10)." (p.9)
